REVIEW OF THE AWARDS
Short Films Section
THE FILM RANKED FIRST AND THE ABSOLUTE AWARD: La Mirada Perdida by Damián Dionisio, Argentina, 2012
Synopsis: Argentina 1976. Claudio is forced to keep hidden his family because of his political ideals. The house in which they live is discovered by the soldiers. There is no time to escape, so Theresa tries to make the family perceive the reality as a fantasy, so the daughter would not see the horror they are about to experience.
Outline
Within a few minutes, the Argentinean director leads the viewer from the scene of the bloody repression of opponents of the military regime to the poetic (and saving) transfiguration of the reality through the miraculous eyeglasses of the fantasy. An extreme gesture of a mother’s love, a light of hope in a world dominated by madness.
THE RUNNER- UP FILM: Ágape, Historia de un sueño by Carlos Quiles, Spain, 2012
Synopsis: David arrived in Thailand as a Burmese refugee from one of the longest and toughest dictatorship in the world and became a father and mentor of more than 300 children. A story about education, self-improvement, strength and love. The story of a dream.
Outline
Carlos Quiles’ film reminds us that wars do not end when the weapons go silent, but when someone, lovingly, takes care of the main victims who survived the conflicts: the children. In fact, we need to start with them if we want to restore the relations between men and women on new bases. On the screen, runs the dream of an ordinary man who did not want to look the other way.
Feature Films Section
THE FILM RANKED FIRST: One Day After Peace by Erez Laufer & Miri Laufer, Israel and South Africa, 2012
Synopsis: Can the means used to resolve the conflict in South Africa be applied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
Outline
Through this emotional and shocking film, the directors explore simultaneously a mother’s interior, complicated and painful mourning process - who finally reaches to search for a contact with her son’s murderer, and with his family - and the hatred between Palestinians and Israelis, pervasive after decades of conflict.
Can the public denunciation of the crimes committed by both parties be the starting point of a peace process, like it happened in South Africa?
With an eye always attentive, but never intrusive, the filmmakers capture on the face of Robi Damelin, Spokesman for the Parents Circle (Forum of the families of the victims of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict) and on the faces of the mothers of young Palestinians killed, the fears, uncertainties, and the tensions that can put an end to a dialog stubbornly built, day after day, with patience. The mothers, who have suffered the most, can therefore be the strongest proponents of the peace process.
THE FILM RANKED SECOND: Oltre il Filo/ Beyond the Wire by Dorino Minigutti, Italy, 2012
Synopsis: The concentration camp of Gonars (UD).
Outline
The director Minigutti became the scrupulous interpreter of the “duty to remember” by following the paths of some thousands Slovenians who were deported, and their subsequent detention under inhumane conditions in the detention camp of Gonars, in Friulia and by interviewing the survivors. The documentary is a page of necessary history aiming to unveiling a crime that was overlooked for a long time.
