RUNNER-UP in feature film section

ENGLAND

The Day after Peace by Jeremy Gilley, 2008, 82’

Feature Film Section:

Runner-Up: The Day After Peace by Jeremy Gilley - 2008 - England

Synopsis: The film deals with the long and torturous journey of Jeremy Gilley to establish September 21st as the World Day for Peace, adopted from UN organizations.

Justification:

The film received the award for knowing how to convey a sense of peace through a work of social solidarity at all levels, involving the government, diplomats, artists and ordinary people that annually promote World Peace Day on September 21st.

1st Place: Memories of a Generation by Aaron Floresco - 2009 - Canada

Synopsis: story of the writer Ali Saeed and other victims of political persecution in Ethiopia

Justification:

The award is granted for the quality of staging, without complacency, of a monologue that becomes the drama of a person, an Ethiopian refugee, and of an entire community in a historical perspective throughout the 1900s. The personal testimonies and the figurative repertoire respond to the same ethical and narrative rigour.

Short Film Section:

Runner-up: Una Vida Mejor by Luis Fernandez Reneo - 2008 - Spain

Synopsis: Based on a true story about three Mexican children trying to cross the border of the United States.

Justification:

The film captures, with deep sensitivity, the tragedy of emigration that is common throughout the world. The skills of direction and photography are pointed out and are primarily based on effectively capturing the dramatic expressions of the characters.

1st Place: The Italian Doctor by Esben Hansen - 2006 - Denmark

Synopsis: The mission of Alberto Cairo in his daily work as an Italian orthopaedic doctor in Afghanistan.

Justification:

The documentary deals with a theme of great visual and emotional impact. With lightness and discretion, the cine camera approaches the devastating faces and bodies stricken by landmines. The sound environment returns with a youthful voice of reality in a natural manner.

Final Winner: “A Film for Peace 2009” THE ITALIAN DOCTOR directed by Esben Hansen - Denmark

The Technical Jury grants the award for the following reasons: it is an example of immense drama and poetry, it indicates the prospect of peace from a journey of pain and hope, and deeply expresses the concept of human dignity in full correspondence with the spirit of the festival.
